1. Learning
Objectives
The objectives
of this project are to:
- Learn to work in
groups of three or four (Not
5); (Other options to be decided by teacher)
- Learn to
delegate specific tasks to each group member;
- Learn to analyse the problem domain and link
it to what have you learned in the class;
- Learn to write a
professional report, and
- Learn to make a presentation based
on the work undertaken.
Project Description /
background details:
A
local Sheikh is concerned that Emirati young people are becoming educated but
have no real experience of the wider world.
He
is concerned that they might be portrayed as ethnocentric as the
Americans in this map.
He has proposed that
students should be given the opportunity to widen their horizons by spending a
year abroad. Students must spend at least one month studying, and/ or
volunteering and one month travelling on a low budget in a country of (Dhs100 a
day) in SE Asia. The Sheikh is going to pay for their flights to SE Asia.
However, students must pay for their daily expenses while they are there.
2. Project:
Report (750-1000
words) and Presentation (8 – 12
minutes; minimum 7’ each!)
Description
Each team is to investigate one specific
country with the aim of preparing a
report and a presentation, giving a detailed insight into multiculturalism
within the specific country. The report and presentation should identify the ethnic minorities within the chosen
country, and explain how factors such as race
and religion can affect multiculturalism
within the country.
Countries
You
may choose from the following: Burma,
Thailand, Malaysia, Kashmir (India), Vietnam, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tibet, The
Philippines, Mongolia, Laos or Papua New Guinea
Each
team who wants to go must write a report and give a presentation including the following:
1). An Introduction which includes:

Rational/
reason for choosing this country
·
The advantages
of travel/ and study
·
The benefits
of volunteering
2). A Description of the Asian country which they are visiting
which includes:-
·
A map and an
itinerary of their travel plans
·
An
understanding of the country including ancient
and modern history, demographic details
·
The cultural diversity of the country
(religions present, different ethnicities present, etc.)
·
The relevant
cultural aspects: language, food, traditional dress, holidays,
celebrations and or ceremonial traditions etc.
3). A Description and real understanding of the people and ethnic divisions and problems in the
country today including specific examples of:

Language
·
Religion
·
Value and
belief systems
·
Disability

4).
A
Description of the places where you could study and/or volunteer
including:

What skills you think you
might be able to offer

The advantages and
challenges of cultural diversity

What do you think is the
best solution for overcoming discrimination, conflicts and wars?

Why do you think learning
about Cultural Diversity might lessen conflicts or wars?

How do you think you and
your group would benefit from taking a year off to study and travel?
Sources of Information
The ADMC Library has many useful resources to complete this project.
Some of them are in Hard copies; some
are online databases and very useful websites. All sources of information
should be listed in the bibliography section of your report.
The project report should also include
a cover page; table of contents along
with a bibliography.
6). Topics
At the end of the project, for each
chosen country, the students should be able to:
a. Show an understanding of the history and demographic details of
the country
b. Explain the cultural diversity of the country by describing the different ethnic groups that make up
the country (see guiding questions below)

Do you know the numbers for each group?

Which are the main minority groups?
·
Where did they originate?
·
When and why did they move to this country?
·
How do they contribute to the life of the nation?
c. Describe some of the relevant cultural aspects of the minority
groups: language, food, traditional dress, holidays, celebrations, ceremonial
traditions etc.
d. Describe the integration and assimilation levels of the
different ethnic groups within the host country.
